Ideas and Cultural Expression: Making Connections

A pedagogical scenario developed in English has recently been added to growing collection of public resources. This scenario explores connections between currents of thought and cultural expression in Quebec from 1500 to the present day. Access it and its associated timeline via the Public resources menu within the application, or view it here.
How to create a scenario?

Edit learning scenario Section

The Edit learning scenario section is where you can put all the references tools online which your students will be able to access while completing your scenario as part of their tasks. Here there are 4 tabs available:

  1. Timeline tab
  2. References (texts) tab
  3. Web site references tab
  4. Images tab

1. Timeline Tab

The Timeline tab allows you to first select the actual timeline you want to associate with the scenario. It is therefore preferrable to create the timeline before you actually create the scenario! Without having an associated timeline a scenario cannot function. A timeline must always be associated with a scenario. That being said, a timeline can be of varying complexity. Students might be expected to work from a completed timeline collection of events, but a scenario could also involve an empty or unorganized timeline that students might have to fill or organize themselves. For more information on the types of scenarios possible consult the pedagogical guide (guide pédagogique en français) on the main Ligne du temp web site.

2. References (texts) Tab

The References (texts) tab area allows you to add texts to which students can refer when completing your scenario. Click on the Add button to add a text for which you must give a title. Above the textarea for writing there is also a button to Add a media element, allowing you to choose an image from any of those already in the scenario's bank, in your own documents, or in the image bank of the RECIT, to better illustrate your reference text:

  • Bank of scenario: you yourself can construct your own image bank associated with this scenario. Read more below in the description for the Images tab;
  • The image bank called My documents is constituted from images that you have uploaded to your own account. To add an image to the My documents image bank click on the button Add media button within the image selection area. You can then indicate its source and give it a detailed description. Each user is allowed to upload 10 megabytes of photos, so resizing before uploading is recommended;

  • Important note : to be able to upload images into the My Documents bank you must have entered an institution code when you registered. For more information consult the web site for la ligne du temps.

  • The image bank of the Ressources publiques du RÉCIT offers you the choice of thousands of images free of copyright that you can browse according to historical period, according to society or by historical phenomena. By clicking on the tab Search our public image bank, you can also search by key word throughout the whole image collection. (Note for non-Francophone users: the descriptions associated with most of the original RECIT image bank were done in French. However, if you use an image into your timeline you can then edit the descriptive text of your copy without affecting the original.)

3. Web site references tab

The tab for Web site references is just that, a place you can propose a selection of web site that students can consult while completing their scenario. As well as the address of the site (the URL) you can also give each site a title and a description to help better orient students. Click the Add button situated at the left bottom of the page, the Edit the different text fields.

4. Images tab

The Images tab allows you to create a collection of images proper to your scenario. By clicking on Add, you can search images in the public RECIT image bank or in your own My documents image bank and add them to your scenario. Students completing your scenario will be able to seclect the images from the scenario's bank instead of searching through the whole public resources collection, saving time and avoiding unnecessary distractions.
